Hosted by Andrew Tarbuck, Chairman of the Middle East Investor Relations Association and Partner of Hogan Lovells, we were delighted to welcome Valerie Haertel, the Global Head of Investor Relations for BNY Mellon, who shared her experience and insights garnered from her time in the field.
Muscat Securities Market (MSM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Middle East Investor Relations Association (MEIRA) on Thursday 14 December, 2017 at MSM Headquarters. Ahmed Saleh Al Marhoon, Director General at MSM, and Alex MacDonald-Vitale, MEIRA Chairman, signed the agreement to mark the start of this collaboration. The objective of the MOU is to further support the exchange in developing IR best practice and enhancing transparency and sophistication across the market. This event paves the way for a series of collaborative initiatives that MEIRA and the MSM plan to deliver over the next months.
Building on the outcomes of the first workshop held in April 2017, Boursa Kuwait hosted its second Investor Relations (IR) workshop catered to listed companies and brokerage firms in collaboration with the Middle East Investor Relations Association (MEIRA), EFG Hermes and MEIRA Kuwait Chapter. The workshop took place at the Boursa Kuwait premises on November 22 with the aim of helping raise awareness and knowledge of the key role of IR in Kuwait and introducing the sell-side analyst’s perspective.
Titled ‘Investor Relations: The Sell-Side View’, the workshop was presented by Mr. Ahmed Kiswani, Risk, Compliance and Corporate Governance Executive Director at Boursa Kuwait. Alex MacDonald-Vitale, MEIRA Chairman, also held a keynote session on IR best practice followed by Ahmad Shamseldin, Head of Research at EFG Hermes, who shared his views on how to engage with the sell-side during an interview conducted by Amir Hanna, Head of Investor Relations at National Bank of Kuwait.
MEIRA, Tadawul and Instinctif Partners conducted on Wednesday 22 November 2017 a workshop entitled “crisis preparedness and its impact on shareholder value” for listed Saudi companies in Riyadh. Presented by global crisis management expert Robert McAllister, the workshop aims to raise awareness amongst listed companies on the importance of crisis readiness and management.
The workshop highlighted the best crisis management international practices, enhancing crisis management readiness, case studies on both poorly and well managed crisis scenarios and its effect on share value, creating a crisis action plan, and developing a strategic initial response to a crisis.
MEIRA and the Palestine Chapter organised a webinar titled "How to be pitch-perfect with your press release" on November 21. The webinar was delivered by Amy Piek, Director at Bell Pottinger Middle East. It included several tips and study cases about how to communicate the corporate message to investor across the main communication channels, including press releases and digital media.
The webinar was followed by a Chapter Meeting chaired by Mohammad Khraim, Manager of Public Relations and Investor Education Department, Palestine Stock Exchange.
Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) today on November 20 the 8th Annual Investor Relations Conference in cooperation with the Middle East Investor Relations Association (MEIRA). The conference was held at the Rotana City Center in Doha with the participation of a wide range of representatives from leading listed companies, market participants, regulatory bodies and investors. With its continuous efforts to further promote the adoption of international best practice in the field of Investor Relations (IR) and Corporate Governance amongst its listed companies, QSE decided to hold this event in an interactive type sitting so that all listed companies and the investment community can gain greater exposure to the latest IR strategies and effective practices utilized worldwide.
MEIRA Saudi Chapter organised an Iftar in Riyadh on June 13. The Iftar offered the MEIRA Saudi Members and guests the perfect opportunity to gather during the holy month of Ramadan and to share their thoughts and experiences related to IR profession.
A total of 17 delegates attended the Iftar, including Walid bin Khaled Al-Hakim, MEIRA Saudi Chapter Head, who took the opportunity to discuss the Chapter's activities for the upcoming months with the rest of the Members.
Instinctif Partners Middle East and MEIRA presented the latest thinking on international crisis management to an audience of investor relations officers from some of the region’s top listed companies.
The workshop, held in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) on Tuesday 23rd May, saw crisis experts share crisis management methodologies and real life case studies helping to identify and understand key risks impacting businesses and their share value.
The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) hosted an outreach session on the opportunities financial technology (FinTech) presents in the Middle East. The seminar was held jointly with the FinTech Hive at DIFC, Hawkamah Institute for Corporate Governance and the Middle East Investor Relations Association (MEIRA) on May 8. The event provided a forum to discuss the current conditions for establishing a FinTech operation in the region, with applications such as financing for small to medium-sized enterprise and financial inclusion. Over 120 delegates from the region’s FinTech industry as well as firms operating in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) attended the event.
MEIRA organised its Dubai Chapter meeting on May 4, at 9.30 am with the aim to discuss IR best practice in the UAE. During the meeting, the members had the opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences related to IR profession.
Following the Members update, Mrs. Ranya Afifi, Chief economist at The Economist, presented a keynote titled "Middle East Macro Outlook: Continued Challenging Environment".
Building on its recent partnership with the Middle East Investor Relations Association (MEIRA), Boursa Kuwait held its first Investor Relations (IR) workshop, catered to listed companies and brokerage firms, in collaboration with MEIRA and Zain Group. The workshop took place at the Boursa Kuwait premises, on 17, April 2017 in an effort to raise awareness and knowledge of the major role of Investor Relations in Kuwait, from an organizational and practical point of view.
MEIRA organised a webinar on ESG data in collaboration with Bloomberg on April 10 to explore current and emerging environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and what company investor relations officers should do to address this area of growing investor focus.
Jennifer Suleiman, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Zain Group, Ali Saribas, Director at Morrow Sodali, Gregory Elders, ESG Analyst at Bloomberg and David Massias, ESG Specialist at Bloomberg, participated as speakers.

On 13 March, London Stock Exchange and Deutsche Bank, in partnership with Al Mawared Brokerage, hold a seminar on Depositary Receipts, in cooperation with The Amman Stock Exchange (ASE).
During the event, experts and senior managers from different entities discussed opportunities for Jordanian public shareholding companies to issue Depositary Receipts and list them on London Stock Exchange.
Clemence Piot, GM of MEIRA, participated in the seminar as a speaker and shared MEIRA's expertise on Investor Relations, and how it would improve the attractiveness of Jordanian listed companies.

The fifth ME-IR Society Annual Conference was held with the support of Dubai Financial Markets and Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange in Dubai's DIFC. The event was attended by more than 170 delegats from across the region.
The ME-IR Society's Education Committee and the UK IR Society have, together with IROs based in the region, collaborated to update the CIRO course material to reflect recent updates in the regulatory framework and to highlight the Middle East as an increasingly important centre for global investment.
The ME-IR Society and the Egyptian IR Association (EIRA) have signed an MOU marking the start of increased collaboration efforts between the two organisations in promoting best practice IR in Egypt. The signing of the MOU will allow the ME-IR Society and EIRA to draw from each other’s expertise and experience in supporting listed companies seeking to develop their IR capabilities.
The first IR Graduate Program was launched on 1st June as a joint initiative between DFM, NASDAQ Dubai and the ME-IR Society. Six finance students from three universities in the UAE were selected for the program where they will do a work placement within the IR teams of some of the major listed companies in the country.
The ME-IR Society and the Qatar Exchange partnered once again to host the 4th Annual IR Conference, which took place in Doha under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Hamad Bin Faisal Bin Thani Al-Thani. The conference, which was attended by Qatari listed entities and capital markets participants, featured panel discussions and presentations on a range of relevant IR topics.
The MOU establishes a working relationship between the Turkish IR Society and the ME-IR Society, allowing listed companies in Turkey and the Middle East to benefit from an expanded network of IR professionals and joint events such as training and IR seminars.
Society Board Members delivered training on IR related topics to representatives from a range of listed Saudi companies such as Savola Group, Yanbu and Rabigh Refining and Petrochemical Co. The training was done in partnership with Tadawul.
The ME-IR Society hosted an IR Breakfast in partnership with SHUAA Capital in Dubai. The event was attended by representatives from Emaar Properties, Dubai Islamic Bank, Arabtec and Taqa among others, and a range of different IR issues were discussed.
The largest IR conference ever to take place in the Middle East, was attended by over 300 IR professionals and capital markets participants from across the region. Winners of the 2012 IR Awards were also announced.
The Qatar Exchange officially joined the Qatar Chapter as a founding member. The ME-IR Society has a strong working relationship with the Qatar Exchange, arranging several events and IR training opportunities each year.
A workshop on the strategy and practice of investor relations for the Kingdom’s listed companies and leading IR professionals took place in Riyadh.
The Society launched its first international chapter outside the region in London. The Chapter in London acts as a platform for interaction between regional corporate members and London based entities focused on the Middle East, and as a conduit for London based institutional investors to learn more about frontier markets in the region.
The Chapter is chaired by the Head of Listed Companies at ADX; Mr. Saif Sayah Al Mansouri and also includes representatives from other companies listed on the ADX including Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Agthia, First Gulf Bank, National Bank of Abu Dhabi and TAQA.
The ME-IR Society, in partnership with Dubai Financial Markets, hosted their second interactive workshop titled, “Achieving Good Investor Relations and Corporate Governance” in Dubai.
The Oman Chapter, which is supported by the Muscat Securities Market, is chaired by Mr Ahmed Al Humaidi, Investor Relations Manager at Nawras, and also includes representatives from Bank Muscat, Omantel, and Renaissance Services.
The ME-IR Society Dubai Chapter Board consists of listed companies from Dubai Financial Market and NASDAQ Dubai including Arabtec, Depa, Dubai Islamic Bank, DP World, Du, Emaar, Emirates NBD, SHUAA Capital and DFM (PJSC). In addition to these companies, representatives from Thomson Reuters and Bank of New York Mellon are also on the Board.
The 3rd annual “IR Interactive Workshop” was organised and held in partnership between the ME-IR Society and the Qatar Chapter founding companies. The event was attended by senior members of management from over 50 listed and private companies from Qatar, Dubai, Oman, Kuwait and Egypt.
The supervisory Board, consisting of representatives from Zain, NBK and KIPCO, and on behalf of the IR Society; Rothschild and Bank of New York Mellon, aims to improve the quality of investor relations practices and related educational resources in Kuwait.
The Palestinian Chapter, which was initiated in partnership with the Palestine Exchange, works actively to improve IR in Palestine. The Board consists of representatives from The Palestine Exchange, PADICO, PALTEL, Bank of Palestine, Jerusalem Pharmaceuticals, and Bank of New York Mellon.
The Qatar Chapter was the first country Chapter to be launched. The founding members consisted of Amwal, BNY Mellon, al khaliji, Qtel, Thomson Reuters, Vodafone Qatar and CBQ.
